Hokkaido Prefecture: Goryokaku Park – Star-Shaped Cherry Blossoms | Hakodate

Goryokaku Park is located in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. The park is one of the best places to see cherry blossoms. Goryokaku Park is a kind of place where you will literally thousands of cherry blossoms (Senbonzakura), Japan said that the park is covered with 1600 cherry trees! Cherry blossoms full bloom from late April up to the beginning of May.

At first, I thought that Hirosaki Park is enough to satisfy my curiosity to personally experience full bloom sakura but I was wrong. Seeing Goryokaku Park is a wow experience! it is indeed a huge star-shaped park covered with sakura trees.

The Goryokaku Park is indeed the nambawan (number one) spot for cherry blossom viewing in Hakodate.

Check my short video clip about our tripventures in Hakodate.

Within the park, you will see the Goryokaku Tower that is 107 meters high

The tower offers the best scene to see an overlooking view of the park. The observation deck is surrounded by glass which lets you clearly view the star-shaped Goryokaku Fortress. The fortress is Western style and it was built in the last years of the Edo era.

The Goryokaku Tower is open from 8AM to 9AM with 840 Japanese yen admission fee. There are food stations and a cafe on the ground floor, this will give you some time to chill and relax while taking a view of the cherry blossoms.

Part of our Hakodate tripventure is to experience the Night View from Mount Hakodate. This is the one thing that should not be missed when visiting Hakodate. You will need to ride a cable car to reach the top in just three minutes and this is the standard way to visit the mountain.

For photographers and enthusiasts, I highly recommend being at the top before sunset as the place gets crowded. This will give you time to pick your own spot for panoramic picture taking and long exposure shots.

Here's my own version of Night view from Mount Hakodate.

Commuting in Japan is fun and exciting, so take pictures and memories as much as you can. :)
