Izu Shaboten Zoo is a park consists of the botanical and zoological garden located in Ito, Shizuoka, Japan. The park is known for Capybara, the world's largest rodent, freely roaming on a specific area. The zoo has 120 different animals and hardly visited by most tourists as it is quite difficult to reach (rural place), either you rent a car or use public transportation which requires a bit of research.
Here's a short video clip of us exiting the Tokai bus and the close encounter with the Capybaras.
You can pet the Capybaras or even feed them. During winter season, you can watch the Capybaras soaking in an Onsen (hot spring).
This 60-year old park also has huge display of Cacti. Now it makes sense why it has a name shaboten, means cactus in English.
Aside from Capybaras, there are Squirrel and never seen before Birds roaming inside the park.
Izu Shaboten Zoo is not a typical zoo because most of the animals, that you do not usually see in a zoo, freely roam inside the park and most are not afraid of humans.
Izu Shaboten Zoo is highly recommended for family trip with kids and group travelers. The place can be reached within 45 minutes by Tokai bus from Ito station or 20 minutes by Tokai bus from Izu Kogen Station. Buses are available every 30 minutes or so during the day.
