Nachi no Taki (Nachi Falls) is one of the scenic and best waterfalls in Japan. It is also Japan's tallest single-tiered (133 meters high) waterfalls located in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture. The Nachi no Taki can be seen from far out on the Pacific Ocean.
Nachi no Taki is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site and it is a part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the mountain of Kii.
Nachi no Taki and Nachi Taisha Shrine can be reached by taking a bus from Kii-Katsuura and Nachi Stations. If you have enough travel time, I recommend staying overnight in Kii-Katsuura then explore (the next day) your way to Nachi Taisha early in the morning. This will give you enough time to explore the scenic place.
The benefits of getting early into the place are: • Experience the scenic waterfall without any form of shadows that cut or block half of the view. • Less crowded. • Gives you the flexibility to explore and enjoy the place without time limitation.
Just across the entrance of Nachi no Taki is a soba bar owned by an Ojiisan. We were lucky to see how he passionately prepare our soba. Itadakimasu!
And, here's our soba eating live action!
A welcoming stone Torii gate as you enter the path to Nachi no Taki.
The stairway to the Nachi no Taki.
There is also a Torri gate at the base near the Nachi No Taki, a spot where locals offer their prayers. The paper formed in zig-zag, known as Shide, hanging on the torii gate (facing the waterfalls) mark the sacred presence of a Shinto deity.
The sound of water as it falls to the ground and the quietness of the place was indeed a great experience.
There is a falls viewing platform where you can get closer to the falls. Locals use this to worship the god of the falls. A 300 yen entrance fee as you enter the falls viewpoint.
The Nachi no Taki was not an easy place to reach since we were staying in Osaka. There seems to be no shinkansen from Osaka to Kii-Katsuura so we traveled through the normal train.
Ultimately, we did not regret spending one day to experience Kii-Katsuura and Nachikatsuura.
